A Real Story

 

A specialty retail chain operated a number of stores within developer operated malls located throughout the United States.  In a majority of these locations, the stores were billed for their electricity usage on an estimated basis such as the store's total square footage. 

 

The retail chain was looking for savings opportunities that can be used to reduce operational expenditures.  The Energy Analysts at Datapult were called in to identify and quantify areas where these savings could be obtained.

 

Analyzing the Situation

 

The first step in assessing the possibility of reducing costs for the retail store required gathering the correct background and usage information.  Datapult collected data from a variety of sources and stored the information in Datapult Central; a leading edge, secure and robust energy information technology center.  Where existing monitoring devices were available, Datapult  interfaced with the equipment to collect data.

Identifying Cost Reduction Opportunities

 

Once the data was collected, Datapult Energy Analysts used their knowledge and skills to search for  savings.  These experts applied their industry experience and the tools available through Datapult to determine where energy was being wasted and to develop strategies for eliminating the waste.

In this instance, Datapult Energy Analysts performed detailed tariff analysis to compare the electricity charges from the landlord to the rate that would be paid for each store if it were directly served by the local electric utility.

 

The Energy Analyst determined that the store operator paid $3,885.00 more for electricity used in these five stores than necessary.  This monthly overcharge translates into annual savings of more than $46,000.
