Utility Allocation Service

Datapult Utility Allocation Service creates new revenue and improves existing revenue streams by more effectively recovering utility expenditures.  Shared utilities are more equitably and fairly apportioned based on accurate usage measurements and specified calculations. For example, a landlord is capable of recovering expenses associated with tenant electricity use based on actual measurement. Tenants who use proportionately less electricity are no longer responsible for subsidizing the usage of a high-consumption neighbor. Tenants pay for their utility expenses based on actual usage, as opposed to a fixed formula or an estimate based upon square footage.

A Real Story

A landlord owns a high-rise apartment building with numerous tenants serviced by one master utility meter. The landlord wishes to accurately monitor all of the tenants in the building so that energy usage can be allocated by actual consumption and not estimated on a square footage basis.  The landlord contacted Datapult who in turn installed the necessary equipment to monitor each tenant's utility consumption. Armed with accurate usage information, the landlord was able to fairly bill each tenant for his or her individual energy usage. As a result, each tenant paid the same amount had they been billed directly by the local utility.

This Landlord received an extra benefit by paying for the entire building's utilities at a lower contracted rate and then allocating expenses to each tenant based upon prevailing direct bill rates.

Datapult Allocation Services

Datapult Utility Allocation Services improve revenue streams by accurately recouping utility expenses from users. Datapult reduces administrative costs associated with determining utility usage and billing the corresponding charges back to tenants.

Monitoring Tenant Usage

In order to obtain Datapult Allocation Services, the Datapult Information Sensor (DIS) or other monitoring device is used to monitor utility (electricity, natural gas, water or other commodity) usage.  The DIS is a flexible monitoring device that gathers detailed energy usage information and monitors consumption profiles for electricity 15-minute increments.

Cost Allocation

Datapult Central, a leading edge, secure and robust energy information technology center, uses the data that has been captured by the monitoring device to determine energy allocation for each tenant.  Once the proper cost allocation is calculated, an electronic accounts receivable file (ARF) is generated for the landlord.  The landlord takes the ARF, creates individual statements and sends them directly to the tenants.  The tenants then remit their respective payments directly to the landlord.

Datapult Utility Allocation Services includes all of the features needed to apportion and allocate utility expenses back to users, including:

  • Usage measured for each user, total facility load and special loads (shared usage);

  • Fifteen-minute interval records of electricity usage

  • Flexible rate calculation to meet individual needs;

  • Accounts receivable file in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet format delivered each billing period;

  • Statements for each tenant ready to print and delivered each billing period.
